If you've ever seen an ad on Father's Day promising amazing discounts in your inbox for your dead dad, you know that sometimes online ads can be troubling. The list continues on: Children's presents for women trying to get pregnant, cat accessories for your dead doggo.
To help people monitor which commercials they run into, Google is taking a tiny but beneficial measure. Users will be able to turn off advertisements for alcohol and gambling, two topics that are very sensitive to a huge amount of people, starting with YouTube in the US. Google Advertising and non-U.S. will carry out the latest alternative. Early next year on YouTube.
The company said in a blog post Thursday that it will add the feature to its controls for ad settings, which also allow individuals to fully toggle off targeted ads. Technically, Google claims that less" of them can be seen by users who want to ban gambling and booze advertising, but that wording is likely to encourage something that inadvertently slips in.
As a sober person, with a lot of people I know who would rather not run into booze sales online out of the blue, this is a helpful move. More like this yes please!
