At a fast pace, Microsoft continues to grow its global Azure data centre footprint. Following the announcement in October of new regions in Austria and Taiwan, the organisation today announced its plans for the opening of a new region in Denmark.
As with many of the latest announcements from Microsoft, the organisation is also dedicated to supplying 200,000 people in the country with digital skills (in this case, by 2024).
With this investment, we are taking the next step in our long-standing commitment to provide the digital technologies, expertise and infrastructure needed to accelerate economic growth, creativity and job creation for Danish society and industries. We are investing in Denmark's digital leap into the future, all in a way that promotes the aggressive climate targets and economic recovery of the world,' said Nana Bule, Microsoft Denmark's general manager.
The new data center will feature support for what has now become the traditional range of Microsoft cloud products: Azure, Microsoft 365 and Dynamics 365 and Power Grid, which will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy and feature several availability zones.
The principle here is, as usual, to have low-latency access to the resources and services of Microsoft. Microsoft's policy has long been to blanket the globe with local data centres. With regions (both operational and announced) in around a dozen countries already, Europe is a prime example of this. Azure currently provides 13 regions in the U.S. (including three for government departments exclusively), with a fifth region arriving soon on the West Coast.
'This is Microsoft's proud day in Denmark,' said Brad Smith, president of Microsoft. Building a hyper-scale datacenter in Denmark ensures that we can store Danish data in Denmark, make computation much faster available, protect data with our world-class protection, safeguard data with Danish privacy laws, and do more to provide our best digital skills training for the citizens of Denmark. This investment represents our profound respect and dedication to the future of Denmark's green and digital leadership globally.
