Telegram receives Discord-like voice chats for communities

- Tech Backbone

Telegram introduces a new feature for community voice chats that is equivalent to an always-on Discord space. Voice conversations are now part of current text chats, which function with friends or relatives as a continuous option to talk live. As they are still open, just as you can in a Discord room or call, you can dip in and out of voice chats.

Telegram is helping "a few thousand participants," so voice chats can have much wider communities for items like live events. The function appears, if allowed, at the top of an existing group chat, enabling everyone to openly join the discussion. On the desktop versions of Telegram for Windows and Mac, you can also use a push-to-talk key for voice chats to monitor your microphone input.

A useful voice chat overlay for Android has also been developed by Telegram, which acts as a floating widget around the device. As Telegram runs in the background, it allows you to see who is communicating or operating a microphone and mute options.

Community voice chats are mainly based on audio, but Telegram promises it will incorporate support for video and screen sharing in the coming weeks. You'll need to be a group administrator if you're interested in checking out group voice chats to allow the functionality in the Group Configuration menu.
